The television of the fifties saw the emergence of the sitcom as a definitive aspect of modern TV. Shows like “I Love Lucy” or “Captain Kangaroo,” focused on humorous, energetic programs, assuming this would motivate adults and children alike to watch and continue watching station programs.
In those days existed just three major TV stations: ABC, CBS and NBC. On June 25, 1951, the Columbia Broadcasting System made the First Commercial Colorcast using the FCC-approved CBS Color System. A milestone was reached when the first coast to coast color was broadcasting the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade on January 1, 1954.
Color television became the status symbol of the fifties. Today 99% of American households ( about 115 Million) possess at least one TV. According to Nielsen Media Research there were 2.73 TV in an average US home in 2006, compared to 2,55 people per household. Half of American households own more then three TV sets.
The average viewer watches about 4 and 1/2 hours of television each day and in an average home the time a TV is turned on is about 8 hours and 14 minutes. Since 2000 the general public in America has developed a huge appetite for Reality TV. Some of these shows get even more viewers than popular shows in prime time. If you ask me, I don’t understand why.
I tried watching some of them to get an idea, but I can’t make it through any of them. Anyway – I know it seems to be a major trend worldwide.
