Jamaica 1966: A trip to Old King’s House

Erected in 1762 as the official residence of the Governor of Jamaica, Old King’s House served this purpose until Kingston became the capital of the country.

On 1 August 1838 the Proclamation of Emancipation was read from the steps of the building, officially ending slavery in Jamaica. A fire destroyed the original building in 1925 – it was later rebuilt, as featured in this rare and original footage from 1966.
