At the face of history: Olympia Park Munich (incld. special Video)

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Olympic Games coming to the town of Munich. And in the year of the 2012 London games, the Special Olympics revisit the Bavarian town. On historic ground. Munich Olympiapark.

It was constructed, especially for the 1972 Summer Olympics, in the area of Munich known as the “Oberwiesenfeld” (“upper meadow-field”). Today the Park continues to serve as a venue for cultural, social, and various other events.

The park is well-known for its bold and impressive roof construction of glass – and for other reasons. The 1972 Olympic Games. The attack on the Israeli Olympic team of the same year. And now for the Special Olympics. It’s the national sports event for mentally disabled people. May 20 to 26, 2012.

The 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games for athletes from all over the world took place in Athens, Greece. That was in 2011. In 2013 the next World Winter Games will be in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
