One year in the United States. A dream for many young students and young adults.

A special programm, financed by the German government, helps to make the dreams come true. Since 33 years. And since it is sponsored by German Bundestag, the programm has a special political touch. “The young adults are some kind of ambassador for their country,” explains German politicial Karsten Möring. This year he voted for 15-year-old Sarah-Lea who now travels to the United States in August – without even knowing to which place exactly.

I would love to stay in Phoenix, Arizona.”

– Sarah-Lea.

Only three weeks before the very date the young adults do not know about their home for the next 12 months. Something that is also part of the programm, as Möring explains. The ability to cope with unknown situations, combined with a general knowledge and interest in history and politics. All those abilities are checked in various test before the trip.

I want to learn more about the real America,” says Sarah-Lea who studied the English language since the age of five. “I am not afraid of the language,” she reveals to the transalantic diablog. “I hope to find new friends for life in America, and I want to keep up with my studies at highschool,” she adds.

I am really looking forward to the presidential elections in November,”

says Sarah-Lea.

While being in the United States all young adults have, in addition to their host families, special persons in charge who help solving problems that might occur – working for the organisation Partnership International that is hosting the youth exchange.
