A star in South Africa, via his music even a part of the Anti Apartheid movemement – and he did not even know that.
In 1967 US singer-songwriter Sixto Díaz Rodríguez released his first single – under the name “Rod Riguez”. Two albums followed the initial release. With not much success in the US.
So Rodríguez went back to a private life in Detroit.
In the meantime he and his albums became extremely successful and influential in South Africa.
A story that a 2012 documentary film by director Malik Bendjelloul re-told – uncluding the false rumour that Sixto Díaz Rodríguez had commited suicide.
After being rediscovered, Sixto Díaz Rodríguez also started to gain popularity in Europe in the United States. Most recently, in 2016, he went out to tour Australia…
