As an extra to our exclusive interview with the Jezabels, this is our show report of their gig at Cologne’s Luxor. A music club just in the centre of the city, very close to the University and in a district where mostly young people live.
And the Jezabels have a very young, loyal and dedicated audience. Some of them seen waiting at the gates three hours before the show. About the gig: Did we miss “Disco Biscuit Love”? Well, maybe a bit. But that’s the only low point of the show.
The evening was opened by Polish support act Julia Marcell. She, a keyboard and a drummer with songs that were a bit bulky. Is that the right word? We think about it while listening to the songs again. They need that and Jezabels guitarist Sam Lockwood likes them – he may have heard some a few more times…
The show starts with “Endless Summer”, the second track of the Jezabels’ debut album “Prisoner”. Before the show Piano player Heather Shannon was spotted in the crowd putting posters on the walls of the Luxor. Those with the hashtag of the night’s show #JEZ180312 and a sweet message obviously written by the band itself. Some words in German inviting fans to upload their own videos and photos at the band’s official website: “Du kannst Photos und Videos von der Show hochladen.”
For most of the 70 minutes set the stage was bathed in red light, only a few songs like the recent US-Single “Rosebud” got some variations in yellow and blue. But as the band says, it’s more about the music. Emotional singing by Hayley Mary and great melodic playing by Heather Shannon on the keys.
But what makes the sound of the Jezabels unique and fitting to their upcoming “very large theaters tour” (Hayley Mary) in Australia, is the amazing drumming by Nik Galop and the sonic landscapes created by guitarist Sam Lockwood. To the end of the set the latter adresses the now very energetic crowd once again saying the band loves Germany.
And if they wanted to proof that, after the show all four members were joined by fans, who came from Frankfurt but also from the nearby Belgium, for a drink, some talk and autographs. Then, off to Hamburg…

“Endless Summer” – The energetic opener instantly causing the impression of witnessing something special. Only a few bands have such a power when entering the stage. And most of them play arenas and stadiums…
“Rosebud” – Its live version is a bit rawer than the studio take but still offers an uplifting chorus. Great piano and guitar work included.
“Horsehead” – Just because of the great intro…

Oh, that’s interesting. The internet connects people. That’s one of the great things about it. You’re absolutely right: It would be great to have the band back together – recording or touring. I came across this page due to a Jezabels video I hadn’t known before and who is it I find here again? Belgium’s number one Jezabels fan (with whom I’ve communicated on twitter for quite a while)! :-))
I feel slightly nostalgic, too, because I’ve just received a newsletter by the band, stating that they will soon re-publish their debut album “Prisoner” with a live bonus concert.
Hard to imagine that 10 years have already passed since then … Let’s hope that, when the virus thing is over and all their individual missions have been accomplished, the Jezzies will come on tour to Germany as a group again.
